Residency

The Shands Health Care system encompasses five acute care hospitals, two specialty hospitals and the largest not-for-profit home care company in the Southeast United States. We offer the most comprehensive range of health care services in North Central Florida. We are dedicated to improving and maintaining the health of the people in our area, not only through medical treatment and diagnostic care but also through a variety of community education programs and preventive health services.

Cornea and External Disease

Fellowship

The University of Florida has very active corneal and external disease, refractive surgery, and contact lens services. The faculty includes Dr. Sonal Tuli (fellowship director), Dr. Lauren Jeang, and Dr. Allan Steigleman. Over 300 new and established patients are seen per week in the cornea clinics at the University hospital. In addition, a large volume of cornea and anterior segment surgery is performed at this institution.

Retina Fellowships

Our Surgical and Medical Retina Fellowships provides the best clinical training regarding the management of retinal diseases. As such, the fellow is involved in all aspects of the clinical care of patients with retinal diseases. Our goal is to train competent, confident, sophisticated retina specialists, with both surgical and medical expertise.

Research Training in Vision Science T32

The Research Training in Vision Science T32 supports 5 PhD trainees with the aim of producing independent investigators capable of sustaining productive research programs in the vision sciences. The program is designed for training students in the areas of molecular/cellular biology, genetics, biochemistry, and immunology with particular focus on training in vision research. The program’s leadership selects mentors based on the productivity of their current research and on their training records. The training program rigorously instructs and reinforces skills pertinent to experimental science and involves a combination of coursework, independent research, oral presentations (in-house, national and international), written research proposals, and the sharpening of communicative skills through continuous mentor feedback and peer review.

Grand Rounds

Each Friday morning the Department of Ophthalmology meets for grand rounds, which are attended by the residents, faculty, and other interested observers including medical students, fellows, & local ophthalmologists.
